• Prophylaxis of NSAID-induced ulcer:
    • PO 100-200mcg QID. Last dose to be given at bedtime
  • Termination of 2nd trimester pregnancy:
    • 200mcg intravaginally every 6 hours for 2 doses for a total of 4 doses
  • Termination of 2nd trimester stillbirth:
    • 200mcg intravaginally every 12 hours
  • Termination of 3rd trimester stillbirth:
    • 100mcg intravaginally every 12 hours

Tablet: 25mcg

  • Can be given bucally or intravaginally

Synthetic prostaglandin E1 analogue

It inhibits gastric acid secretion and protects gastric mucosa by increasing bicarbonate secretion. It also ripens the cervix and increases uterine tone and contractility.

  • NOT to be used in women of child-bearing potential in GI use (abortifacient)
  • Uterine rupture has been reported when administered in pregnant women to induce labor or to induce abortion beyond the 8th week of pregnancy
  • Hypersensitivity to class/compounds
  • Prior cesarean section when used for cervical ripening
  • History of major uterine surgery when used for cervical ripening
  • Oxytocin
  • Magnesium salts
