To be started 1st Sunday after onset of menses

Tablet: 30mcg/150mcg

  • Taken without regard to meals
  • Restart >4 weeks postpartum or >6 weeks postpartum if breastfeeding
  • Administered at the same time everyday
  • Should start on day 1 of menstrual cycle or 1st Sunday after onset of menses

COCs

Ethinyl estradiol: It reduces release of LHRH from hypothalamus. It reduces release of gonadotropin from pituitary and increases synthesis of DNA, RNA and various proteins in target tissues

Levonorgestrel: Progestin. It inhibits secretion of gonadotropins from pituitary. It prevents follicular maturation and ovulation and stimulates growth of mammary tissues

  • Oral contraceptive-associated or pregnancy-associated cholestatic jaundice history
  • Thrombophlebitis or history
  • Thromboembolism or history
  • Major surgery with prolonged immobilization
  • Smokers >35 years
  • Heavy smokers
  • Thrombogenic valvular or rhythm heart disease
  • CAD
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Acquired or hereditary thrombophilia
  • Persistent SBP >160 or DBP >100
  • Hypertension with vascular disease
  • DM with vascular disease
  • Migraine headache with/without aura patients >35 years
  • Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
  • SLE
