• Hyperthyroidism in adults:
    • Mild: Initially PO 15mg/day divided TDS
    • Moderate: Initially PO 30-40 mg/day divided TDS
    • Severe: Initially PO 60mg/day divided TDS
    • Maintenance: PO 5-30mg/day divided TDS
  • Hyperthyroidism in children:
    • Initially PO 0.5-0.7mg/kg/day OD/ or divided TDS
    • Maintenance: PO 0.2mg/kg/day OD or divided TDS
    • Max 30mg/day
  • Grave’s disease:
    • Adults: PO 10-20mg/day *1
    • Children: PO 0.2-0.5mg/kg/day
    • May subsequently taper or discontinue if TSH levels are normal
  • Thyrotoxicosis (Off-label):
    • Adults: PO 15-20mg every 4 hours during first day as adjunct to other agents
      • Reduce frequency to OD /BD once patient is stable
    • Children: PO 0.5-1mg/kg/day divided TDS

It is a prodrug of methimazole which works by inhibiting synthesis of thyroid hormone by blocking oxidation of iodine in thyroid gland thereby blocking synthesis of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)
