- Inhibition of lactation:
- 1mg single dose
- Given on day 1 of postpartum
- Suppression of established lactation:
- 0.25mg BD twice a week
- Hyperprolactinemia either idiopathic or from pituitary adenoma:
- 0.25mg twice a week
- Can be increased every 4 weeks by 0.25mg twice a week based on prolactin levels
- Max: 1mg twice a week
Tablet: 0.5mg
- Lowest effective dose is used
- May discontinue after normal prolactin levels are maintained for 6 months
- Preferably taken with meals
Dopamine receptor agonist
It has high affinity for dopamine D2 receptors. When these receptors are stimulated, they inhibit prolactin release.
