• Inhibition of lactation:
    • 1mg single dose
    • Given on day 1 of postpartum
  • Suppression of established lactation:
    • 0.25mg BD twice a week
  • Hyperprolactinemia either idiopathic or from pituitary adenoma:
    • 0.25mg twice a week
    • Can be increased every 4 weeks by 0.25mg twice a week based on prolactin levels
    • Max: 1mg twice a week

Tablet: 0.5mg

  • Lowest effective dose is used
  • May discontinue after normal prolactin levels are maintained for 6 months
  • Preferably taken with meals

Dopamine receptor agonist

It has high affinity for dopamine D2 receptors. When these receptors are stimulated, they inhibit prolactin release.
