- Lactation inhibition:
- 5mg BD for 14 days
- Menstrual cycle disorders and infertility in women:
- 2.5-3.75mg BD/TDS OR 1 tab BD/TDS until menstrual cycle returns to normal. Treatment can be continued for several cycles to prevent relapse.
- Prolactinomas:
- 5-3.75mg BD/TDS increasing to several tablets daily as required.
- Acromegaly:
- 5-3.75mg BD/TDS increasing to 20-30mg daily depending on response.
- Puerperal breast engorgement:
- 5mg STAT repeated after 6-12 hours if required.
- Incipient puerperal mastitis:
- 5mg BD for 14 days plus an antibiotic
- Benign breast disease:
- 5-3.75mg OD increasing to 2-3 tablets per day
- Parkisonism:
- Start with low dose of 25mg OD nocte for 1 week.
- Increase by 1.25mg per day every week.
- Common dose: 10-40m per day.
- Max dose 100mg.
- Start with low dose of 25mg OD nocte for 1 week.
Tablet: 2.5mg
- Should always be taken during a meal
- For lactation inhibition:
- Should not be instituted earlier than 4 hours after parturition or abortion.
- Slight milk production expected after completed dose which can be treated by resuming treatment for a further 1 week.
It is a dopamine receptor agonist in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland which inhibits prolactin secretion and lowers blood levels of growth hormone in acromegaly.

- Hypersensitivity to ergot alkaloids
- Adrenal/thyroid disorders
- Intracranial lesion
- Idiopathic vaginal bleeding.
- Erythromycin
- Dopamine antagonists
- Other ergot derivatives.
