- Dosage (Lozenges/Spray/Gargle):
- Lozenges: Dissolve 1 in mouth every 2–4 hours as needed
- Spray/Gargle: Apply 1–2 sprays or gargle with diluted solution 2–4 times/day
Topical: Apply thin layer to affected skin 1–3 times/day
- Iodine: Typically 1–2% (as povidone-iodine or tincture)
- Menthol: 1–10 mg per lozenge or up to 2% in topical
- Phenol: 0.5–2% (oral spray) or 1.4–1.5% (lozenges)
- Do not swallow sprays or gargles unless labeled for oral ingestion
- Use lozenges slowly; do not chew
- Avoid use on deep or puncture wounds (topical iodine)
- Rinse mouth with water after prolonged use
- Iodine: Broad-spectrum antiseptic, disrupts protein and nucleic acid structure of microbes
- Menthol: Local counterirritant and cooling agent, mildly numbs mucosa
- Phenol: Mild local anesthetic and antiseptic, denatures proteins
- Local irritation: Burning, stinging, or dryness (mouth or skin)
- Allergic reactions: Rash, itching (rare)
- Systemic iodine absorption (rare): Thyroid dysfunction with prolonged use
- Mucosal damage if overused or used in high concentrations

- Broken skin or deep wounds (topical iodine)
- Prolonged use in people with thyroid disease (iodine)
- Children under 6 years (sprays and lozenges – risk of choking or misuse)
- Lithium: Caution with iodine (can affect thyroid)
