- ICU sedation:
- Loading dose: IV 1mcg/kg over 10 minutes
- Maintenance: 0.2-0.7mcg/kg/hr continuous IV infusion. Max 24 hours
- Procedural sedation:
- Loading dose:IV 1mcg/kg over 10 minutes
- Maintenance: 0.6mcg/kg/hr titrate to effect (usually 0.2-1mcg/kg/hr)
- Schizophrenia or bipolar disorder-associated agitation:
- Mild-moderate: 120mcg bucally/sublingual *1. Max 180mcg/day
- Severe: 180mcg bucally/sublingual *1. Max 360mcg/day
- Injection:

Alpha-2 agonist sedative
It activates G-proteins in the brainstem causing an in inhibition of norepinephrine release. It also activates presynaptic alpha-2 adrenergic receptors
