• ICU sedation:
    • Loading dose: IV 1mcg/kg over 10 minutes
    • Maintenance: 0.2-0.7mcg/kg/hr continuous IV infusion. Max 24 hours
  • Procedural sedation:
    • Loading dose:IV 1mcg/kg over 10 minutes
    • Maintenance: 0.6mcg/kg/hr titrate to effect (usually 0.2-1mcg/kg/hr)
  • Schizophrenia or bipolar disorder-associated agitation:
    • Mild-moderate: 120mcg bucally/sublingual *1. Max 180mcg/day
    • Severe: 180mcg bucally/sublingual *1. Max 360mcg/day
  • Injection:
    • 100mg/mL
  • Sublingual tablet:
    • 120mg
    • 180mg
  • Loading dose infused over 10 minutes
  • For the infusion, use components made with synthetic or coated natural rubber gaskets

Alpha-2 agonist sedative

It activates G-proteins in the brainstem causing an in inhibition of norepinephrine release. It also activates presynaptic alpha-2 adrenergic receptors
