It opens KATP channels relaxing the vascular muscles, decreasing vaso-resistance and blood pressure thus relieving the pain and at the same time protecting myocardium against ischemia.
It also causes the relaxation of coronary vascular smooth muscles by inhibiting guanylyl cyclase and increasing cyclic GMP levels with the activation of K+ channels and hyperpolarization through a second mechanism.
