• Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis:
    • PO 500mg BD OR 250mg QID (i.e, 1000mg/day)
  • Moderate-severe acne:
    • Adults: PO 500mg BD OR 250mg QID (i.e, 1000mg/day)
    • Adolescents: PO 250-500mg BD/QID *1-2 weeks, then 250-500mg OD
  • Brucellosis:
    • PO 500mg QID *3/52 accompanied by streptomycin IM 1g BD *1/52 then OD *1/52
  • Syphilis in patients allergic to penicillin:
    • Early syphilis (duration <1 year): PO 500mg QID *15/7
    • Syphilis (duration >1 year [except neurosyphilis]): PO 500mg QID *1/12
  • Gonorrhea:
    • PO 500mg QID *1/52
  • Uncomplicated urethral, endocervical or rectal infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis
    • PO 500mg QID *1/52
  • Bacterial infections:
    • Adults: PO 1-2 g/day PO divided BD/QID
    • Children >8 years: PO 25-50mg/kg/day divided QID
      • Max: 3g/day

Capsule: 250mg

  • To be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals
  • To be taken with a lot of water to avoid esophageal irritation and ulceration

It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding with 30S and possibly 50S ribosomal subunit(s)
