- Bacterial infections , intra-abdominal infection, skin & soft tissue infections:
- IV/IM 5 g (1g ampicillin + 0.5g sulbactam) to 3g (2g ampicillin + 1g sulbactam) every 6 hours. Max 12g/day
- Severe PID:
- IV 3g (2 g ampicillin + 1 g sulbactam) every 6 hours.
- Community-acquired pneumonia:
- IV 1.5-3g every 6 hours for at least 5 days
- Pyelonephritis:
- IV 3g (2g ampicillin + 1g sulbactam) every 6 hours * 14/7
Injection: 1.5g
- Slow IV injection over at least 10-15 min or infusion over 15-30 min.
- IM: deep into large muscle mass. Use within 1 hour.
Ampicillin: interferes with bacterial wall synthesis by interfering with peptidoglycan synthesis hence bactericidal.
Sulbactam: beta-lactamase inhibitor.
Amoxicillin alternative when unable to take amoxicillin orally.
- Pain at site of IM/IV injection

- Thrombophlebitis
- Eosinophilia
- Glossitis
- Stomatitis
- Black hairy tongue
- Candidiasis
- Urine retention
- Abdominal distension
- Throat tightness
- Epistaxis
- Edema
- Hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins
- Patients with history of hepatic dysfunction or cholestatic jaundice.
- Infectious mononucleosis
- Live attenuated vaccines
- Tetracyclines
