• Surgery: post-operative wound infections, post-operative pulmonary infections.
  • Respiratory infections: bronchopneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
  • Obstetrics: puerperal fever.
  • Other infections such as septicemia, bone infections e.g., osteomyelitis, ear, nose and throat infections, GI infections
    • Adults: PO 500mg-1g every 6 hours
    • Children 3-10yrs: PO 250-500mg every 6 hours
    • Children 1-2 years: PO 250mg every 6 hours
    • Neonates: PO 0.6mL (90mg) of reconstituted suspension every 4 hours
    • IM: 250mg-1g QID
    • IV: 500mg-1g QID
  • Capsules:
    • 250mg/250mg
  • Suspension:
    • 125mg/125mg per 5mL
    • 60mg/30mg per 0.6mL
  • Injection:
    • 500mg
    • 1g
  • Administer 0.5 to 1 hour prior to feeding or 2hrs after feeding

Ampicillin: Broad-spectrum penicillin. It inhibits cell wall mucopeptide synthesis thereby causing cell death. Bactericidal

Cloxacillin: Binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis.

  • Diarrhoea,
  • Nausea & vomiting
  • Skin rash
  • Urticaria
  • Pruritus
  • Hypersensitivity to beta lactams e.g. penicillins, cephalosporins.
  • Prolonged use may occasionally result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.
  • Cloxacillin can displace bilirubin from protein-binding sites. Normal caution should therefore be exercised in the treatment of jaundiced neonates. It may increase the risk of jaundice in newborn babies.
  • If prolonged or significant diarrhoea occurs or the patient experiences abdominal cramps, treatment should be discontinued immediately and the patient investigated further.
