Corticosteroid prodrug. Oxazaline derivative of prednisolone. 6mg deflazacort has anti-inflammatory potency of about 5mg prednisolone.
Its active metabolite, 21-desDFZ, acts through the glucocorticoid receptor to exert anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects.
It diffuses across cell membranes and forms a complex with specific cytoplasmic receptors. These complexes then enter the cell nucleus, binds to DNA, and stimulate transcription of mRNA which leads to protein synthesis of various enzymes that are responsible for the effects of systemic corticosteroids.
