- Topical antiseptic used for:
- Minor cuts, wounds, abrasions, burns
- Skin disinfection before injections or procedures
- Hand sanitizers, surgical scrubs, mouthwashes, disinfectant solutions
- Applied topically 1–3 times/day, depending on the product type and severity
- Varies by product:
- Benzalkonium chloride: typically 0.1%–0.13%
- Chlorhexidine gluconate: typically 0.05%–0.5%
- Clean the skin/wound before application
- Apply directly to affected area or use as directed (e.g., soak or rinse)
- Do not use on eyes, ears (with perforation), or deep body cavities
- Let dry before covering with a dressing (if needed)
- Benzalkonium chloride: a quaternary ammonium compound that disrupts bacterial membranes
- Chlorhexidine: binds to bacterial cell walls, causing leakage and death
- Broad-spectrum action against bacteria, some fungi, and viruses
- Effective and residual antimicrobial activity
- Usually mild:
- Skin irritation, burning, or itching
- Rare: Allergic reactions, contact dermatitis
- Known hypersensitivity to quaternary ammonium compounds or chlorhexidine
- Avoid in:
- Eyes
- Ears (if tympanic membrane is perforated)
- Brain/spinal tissue
- Large open wounds unless directed by a physician
- Inactivated by:
- Soaps, anionic detergents, and organic matter
- Avoid concurrent use with other antiseptics unless known to be compatible
