- Edema associated with heart failure or renal disease
- 10-20mg OD initially; may increase dose by doubling until desired diuretic effect is achieved
- Edema associated with hepatic disease:
- 5-10 mg OD initially with aldosterone antagonist or potassium-sparing diuretic
- May increase dose by doubling until desired diuretic effect achieved
- Max 40mg/day
- Mild-moderate hypertension:
- 5-10mg OD. Max 10mg/day

- Administer without regard to meals
- Best administered in the morning due to diuretic effect
Loop diuretic; sulphonylurea diuretic
It inhibits Na, K and Cl reabsorption at the ascending loop of Henle by acting on the Na-K-2Cl reabsorptive pump. It causes increased excretion of water, sodium, chlorine, magnesium and calcium. Has better diuretic effect than other loop diuretics
