• Acute diarrhoea:
    • Adults & children > 12 years:
      • 4mg STAT then 2mg after every loose stool/motion (max daily dose is 16mg)
    • 4-8 years:
      • 1mg QID * 3/7
    • 9-12 years:
      • 2mg QID * 3-5 days

  • Drink a lot of water and minerals to replace electrolytes lost.

It binds to the opiate receptor in the gut wall reducing propulsive peristalsis and increasing intestinal transit time. It also increases the tone of the anal sphincter thereby reducing incontinence and urgency.
