- Dissolution of gallstones:
- Adult: 8–12 mg/kg OD nocte OR 2 divided doses for up to 2 years; treatment is continued for 3–4 months after stones dissolve.
- Primary biliary cirrhosis:
- Adult: 12–16 mg/kg daily in 3 divided doses for 3 months, then 12–16 mg/kg OD nocte
Tablet: 150mg, 300mg
To be taken at bedtime.
Diets with high cholesterol and calories should be avoided.
It reduces elevated liver enzyme levels by facilitating bile flow through the liver and protecting the liver cells. It also reduces the fractional reabsorption of cholesterol by the intestines. The reduced cholesterol saturation allows the gradual solubilization of cholesterol from gallstones, leading to their subsequent dissolution.
