- Gout

Initial dose is 100mg daily increased at weekly intervals by 100mg to a maximum of 800mg.
Daily doses above 300mg should be given in divided doses for not more than 300mg.
Maintenance:
- 200-300mg – mild gout
- 400-600mg– moderately tophaceous gout
Tablets: 100mg, 300mg
- Taken after meals to reduce stomach upset.
- It may cause more gout attacks for several months after starting this medicine while the body removes the extra uric acid.
- Take with a lot of water. Maintain fluid intake necessary to yield urine output of at least 2 L/day in adults
Xanthine oxidase inhibitor.
Together with its metabolite oxpurinol, it inhibits conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine to uric acid by inhibiting xanthine oxidase. It also decreases de novo synthesis of purines by pseudofeedback inhibition leading to decreased uric acid production.
