Proton Pump Inhibitor. R(+) enantiomer of racemate rabeprazole.
The PPI binds irreversibly to H+/K+ ATPase enzyme (proton pump) on gastric parietal cells and blocks the secretion of hydrogen ions, which combine with chloride ions in the stomach lumen to form gastric acid. PPIs block secretion of hydrogen ions into the stomach.
Generally well tolerated.
